John Mortensen was the number three pick overall in the 1996 NBA Draft, turning pro out of high school. Drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves, he earned Rookie of the Year and NBA All-First Team honors while leading the league in scoring and in assists.
After only two seasons with the T-Wolves, Mortensen was traded to the Toronto Raptors for an unprecidented 12 players. With the Raptors, he lead the NBA in Scoring, averaging 37.4 ppg. He took dunking to another level, winning the 1999 Slam Dunk Contest.
After his contract with Toronto expired, Mortensen signed as a free agent with the Phoenix Suns for a record $275 million over 4 years. With Phoenix he was named MVP of the 2000 NBA All Star Game, scoring 74 points for the West All Stars.
