Sconefest started out as a small get together of a few innocent high school students and has blossomed into a source of inspiration and joy for hundreds. Sconefest includes but is not limited to the following: scones, homemade ice cream, root beer and fun.
The first Sconefest occurred in 1995 in the small community of South Jordan, Utah. 10 people were in attendence. The festivities included scones, homemade ice cream and basketball.
The Sconefest II, then called "Sconefest 96," took place in the fall of 1996. It is estimated that 100 people were in attendence. Besides scones and homemade ice cream, the glow-in-the-dark football was introduced and became an instant crowd favorite. The stage was set. The future of Sconefest had no limits.
Sconefest III ushered in the end of an era. As high school friends said good bye and parted ways, the summer of '96 ended with scones, homemade ice cream, glow-in-the-dark football and a failed attempt at homemade rootbeer. Once again, an estimated 100 people were in attendence.
After much hype, t-shirts and a web page, Sconefest returned in August of 1999 following a three-year hiatus with Sconefest IV. The scones, homemade ice cream and homemade rootbeer served as segway for unforgettable moments. Dave Vawdrey officially formed the Sconefest Committee. Fierce competition and jovial comradery arose in the hand-in-the-bucket-of-ice game (Mike Dansie and Nate Pilcher tied with 10 minutes). Doug Worthington favored us with two heart-warming renditions (English & Spanish) of "The Brocoli Song." Dave pulled out the guitar and pondered what life would be like if he had a million dollars. Fatty Matt was shaved to the toons of Aaron Neville (ala Phenomenon).
Sconefest V: Idaho's Revenge was without a doubt the most attended Sconefest. At least 150 people attended. With five batches of scones, three machines of homemade ice cream, 10 gallons of homemade root beer, 28 t-shirts and 32 CDs, one can only wonder what the future holds. World peace? The end of starvation? The sky is the limit. We hope to see everybody in August for Sconefest VI: Back in the Valley. (tentative title)
